If you have paid any attention to the covers of the magazines at the checkout aisle, you’ve probably seen headlines of articles revealing the secrets of celebrities or entertainers. Someone was in a ‘secret’ relationship but now wants to tell all. Someone else kept journals of private conversations and now want to uncover the truth. Everyone has secrets.
However, there are certain attributes possessed by people who continually win, that should be open and available for all to see. In fact, many of these traits are on public display at all times. Unfortunately, too many people miss the ‘obvious’ because they don’t know what to look for or they don’t understand what they are seeing. Each person who wins continually has a secret. And I want to help uncover it…
Seeds that remain in the bag will never produce a harvest. One will never score the winning point, graduate from college, close the major business deal or start a business if they never try. The reason winners routinely experience and enjoy much more of what life has to offer is because they choose to get out of the stands and onto the playing field. One should never expect to have it all until they have been willing to give it all.
I once heard that Henry ‘Hammering Hank’ Aaron did not get a single hit in his first major league baseball game. He ended up with the second most career homeruns in the history of professional baseball. Wayne Gretzky, arguably the best hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates said, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” When he retired, he held or shared 61 records in the National Hockey League, including the most regular season goals, assists, and hat tricks. The person who holds the title of greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, has been quoted with, “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
The Winner’s Secret – take the seeds out of the bag, plant them in good soil and prepare to receive your harvest. Get out of the stands and into the game. Get into school. Take the job, project, team lead. It is not required that you be the best. You don’t have to be the smartest. Others may be more talented or most athletic. Many people, who no one thought could win, did win. Why, because they competed. And you can win, not as a spectator, but only as a participant.
