Treasures of the Heart

When was the last time you stopped to look at the different kinds of seeds? An apple seed looks nothing like a peanut, which is entirely different from a sunflower seed. However, there are other times when, even for the skilled farmer, it is difficult to distinguish one seed from another. Imagine trying to determine if a seed is a tangerine or a tangelo. Unless you have spent considerable time working in the industry it would be highly difficult to tell those seeds apart.

Christ once told a story of a farmer who planted a field of wheat. Unbeknownst to the farmer, an enemy came in and planted another kind of seed in the field. When the seed sprouted and the attendants went in to inspect the growing plants they discovered that the owner’s field had been sabotaged. The attendants wanted to get rid of the invasive plants at once. But the owner understood that to do so would potentially damage the good crop and he would lose out on the harvest completely. He made the decision to allow the plants to grow together until the time of the harvest. Once the plants were fully grown, it would be easy to identify the good crop from the invasive one.

What method do you use to determine the quality of the people you select as friends or companions? Upon meeting someone, you normally see the best of that individual, who has as their goal, to make a good impression. Many times, you hear the answers you want to hear, see the behaviors you want to see and are left wondering if this is a person who may have been placed in your life to add value. The seeds look too close to call.

It is difficult to tell, while looking at the seed, whether or not the fruit from the crop will be sweet or bitter. It is not until we taste the fruit that we are able to make that determination. Christ said, “… a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43 NKJV)

Who a person is will always surface in time. When under pressure, who a person is and what they believe is always revealed. When you squeeze a grapefruit, you never get apple juice. Determining the quality of the people we meet is also highly difficult without spending some time observing them. Christ said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of his heart the mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45 NKJV)

We are not called to render judgments about people. However, all of us can evaluate the treasures of the heart by becoming great fruit inspectors.
