I Love You!

How comfortable are you talking about love? It is probably the one topic that can be the source of the greatest joy and the greatest pain? Why is it that something that is so strongly desired by so many often so difficult to explain or obtain?

Do you remember these words of a song, “What the world needs now is love, sweet love”? Is the world really suffering from a shortage of love? Or it is possible that we may be able to satisfy the need simply by learning how to love – unconditionally?

At an early age, children learn that by giving love to someone, it positions them for greater benefits. At the same time, parents shower their children with love hoping to help build the self-esteem of the child and get the child to behave a certain way. As long as each party receives the response they desire, the cycle is repeated. This provides the seed for harvesting conditional love.

I have heard that, when dating, the male is less likely to use the “L” word. Or, when he uses it, it may be done with ulterior motives. I have heard that when the female says, “I love you” and it is not reciprocated, it may cause her to begin questioning whether or not this person really cares for her. We all know, however, that it is possible to love someone simply because of who the person is and what they mean to you.

Love is a powerful weapon. Lives have been started and ended because of love. A great preacher once wrote, I Did It In the Name of Love. Love, properly appropriated, removes emotions, thoughts, and selfishness from the equation and often responds in spite of. In order to get to that place, we can’t just be in love. Love has to be in us – we become love. That is why God is able to give and forgive. He is Love.

Tell the people who are important to you that you love them. Let them know that your life is enriched by their presence. I love you, and there is nothing you can do about it!
