Stuck In A Rut

One of the greatest motivational speakers of all times (in my opinion) is Zig Ziglar. Zig said being in a rut was like being stuck in a grave with the head and the foot sections cut out. Others have described it like a hamster in a cage going around and around on a wheel. Someone went as far as to say being in a rut was like experiencing insanity – doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

Possibly one of the most amazing things about so many people in our society is that they have allowed themselves to get caught up in a cycle of life that they absolutely detest but refuse to do anything to change. I can fully understand this mindset if the individual was limited in such a way where she or he could not do anything differently. But it completely baffles me to see individuals who have the freedom to choose a different path for their lives but who imprison themselves by their thoughts and fears.

As you read this I want you to pause at this place and reflect on your RoUTine for the past couple of weeks. Have you allowed yourself to become enslaved by your daily habits? Are you simply doing what you do because you have come to believe that there is nothing better available for you?

Our results, like a reflection from the mirror, reveal a picture of an accumulation of our actions and decisions. The mirror won’t change the reflection any more than the results change the actions or decisions. The results, and the reflection, change when we do.

I have to warn you. The rest of this piece may make you feel like you are taking some really unpleasant tasting medicine. Do you like your job? Do you like you supervisor? Do you like getting up in the morning and going back to that office, listening on the phone to those customers who are rude and disrespectful?

At the college, do you want to continue listening to that professor who 1) Doesn’t like his/her job (and you can tell they don’t like what they do by the lack of passion in the manner in which they teach); and 2) Have never personally tested the information they are teaching in the real world to prove whether or not it works. Come on. Honestly, do you believe that this is all that is available for you?

If you have not heard it before, let me be the first to tell you. There are other options. If you have heard it before allow me the privilege of reminding you. If you do not want to remain where you are, stuck doing things that bring you no fulfillment or enjoyment, you do not have to.
